We are a small garlic farm nestled on a quiet fertile hillside in Monroe, Maine. We are blessed with land that has good bones, bones that are pesticide and herbicide free. It is our intention to keep it that way. Our commitment to our customers and, of course, Mother Earth is to provide you with an all natural, sustainable, disease and chemical free product. This means we will not use synthetic or organic pesticides and herbicides. We will do this while also being active stewards, intent upon enriching the land in a sustainable, ecologic manner.
Envision if you can, your seed garlic growing in rich, moist, dark lightly tilled earth. No pesticides or herbicides, either organic or synthetic, have been absorbed into the plants or soil. Your crop has been sustainably grown with multiyear (three year minimum) rotations into soil ready to provide optimum all natural nutrients to these plants. Our soil has been enriched in the fallow years with a two-prong approach, happening simultaneously. Cover crops are grown on the land to maximize weed suppression and nutrient mining of both the soil and air, providing a nutrient dense green manure. We anticipate incorporating ducks, chickens and geese to range over the fields to assist in weed and insect control. Of course, an added benefit will be the nutrient rich manure these hungry critters will leave behind. If Snaggletooth feels the soil is in need of something else, which would be a rarity indeed, it will be either compost or an organically approved amendment. This is our current practice, which of course we expect to evolve. We truly want to be as ecologically mindful as possible, and will be working toward this end. For example, our seventy-acre farm’s forest needs to be utilized for fuel, and Snaggletooth has expressed an interest in hugelkultur. While not currently practiced, we will be investigating this fascinating concept in the near future.
